Membership Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why did the membership statuses change?
-
The restructuring of the member statuses worked to better focus on the health of chapters and create stronger members. To address decreasing retention within chapters, a process focused on educating members about the honorary was introduced through pre-membership as candidate members. This allowed for members to have a larger picture of what being a member of NRHH entails prior to joining. In addition, the off-campus membership option was added to support members who were involved but were no longer eligible to live on-campus due to institutions no longer able to accommodate upper-division housing.
-
-
How long does a student have to live on-campus before being eligible for candidate membership?
-
Students must have lived on for a minimum of at least one academic term, as defined by the institution.
-
-
What does formal intent look like for candidate membership?
-
Depending on your chapter and campus structure will determine what formal intent for candidate membership looks like. Some chapters will utilize an application while others will ask for an oath. If you are unsure of what will be best for your campus you can reach out to your Regional Associate Director for NRHH who can assist in developing a plan for your campus.
-
-
How long should the candidate member process last?
-
Each chapter currently manages their own Candidate Member Education process. Some common methods include one extended session, multiple one-hour sessions, or requiring participation in the NRHH Candidate Member Education Program organized and ran by the chapter and NACURH Leadership. If you are unsure of what will be best for your campus you can reach out to your Regional Associate Director for NRHH who can assist in developing a plan for your campus.
-
-
What are the requirements of being an on-campus member?
-
Depending on your chapter and campus structure will determine what requirements on-campus members must complete. -
-
Does my chapter have to allow for off-campus members to have voting rights?
-
No. Chapters have the autonomy to decide whether or not that they want their off-campus members to be eligible to vote or not. Chapters though must recognize their off-campus members.
-
-
How can off-campus members have voting rights?
-
Off-campus members looking to obtain voting rights will follow their chapter requirements which may include completing an Off-Campus Membership Pledge.
